Class Description:
This class is for letter recognition, letter/sound correspondence and phonological awareness to prepare for students for reading and to help those who are just beginning to blend words.

Teacher bio:
My name is Melanie Lackey. I am a certified EC-6th grade teacher.  I homeschooled my daughter from kindergarten through 12th grade. My teaching experience in public schools began after her graduation where I have taught 1st grade, kindergarten (long term sub), and pre-k. I have been teaching pre-k at Wild Peach Elementary since 2019, but am retiring and looking forward to spending more time with my granddaughters.

IEW: Bible Heroes

With IEW: Bible Heroes, your student will get to know the heroes of the Bible while
learning to write with Structure and Style. Over the course of two semesters, we will
write using IEW methods, learn new vocabulary, read, and study grammar. This course is
designed for students in first and second grade or older students that need a little more
help with the writing process. This course will have work outside of class time that will
be completed by the student (with parent help).

IEW Elementary

IEW Class Overview:
IEW Adventures in Writing for 3-5 grade students. This class will include writing, grammar and some vocabulary.  Grammar topics will be introduced in class and sentences will be  assigned for homework (optional) to be graded by the parent. A writing assignment will be started in class each week, following IEWs pattern of reading a short story/article, creating a keyword outline, and independent writing using a checklist/guide. The writing assignments will need to be worked on at home to be turned in the following week. There are suggested books/stories students can read at home to add more literature to this class.

IEW Intermediate Writing

From the Anglo-Saxons to the Renaissance, from chivalrous knights to Genghis Khan, students will improve their knowledge of medieval times while learning to write with structure and style. Working through all of IEW’s Units, students learn to take notes, retell narrative stories, summarize references, write from pictures, compose essays, construct formal critiques and form responses to literature. Included in the coursework are grammar, memorization, vocabulary and supplemental literature components.

Teacher expectations for students:  At home time commitment minimum of 5 hours per week. This includes writing, grammar, vocabulary practice, and daily reading log 

Equal commitment and dedication to all aspects of the class: writing, grammar, vocabulary, and assigned reading material.

Windows to the World An Introduction to Literary Analysis

This course introduces high school level students to literary analysis. Students will learn to recognize elements of literature: setting, plot, characterization, imagery, allusions, parallelism, and much more.

Excellence In Literature (EIL)

American Literature (English 3) is a one year, college-preparatory literature and composition course, and is the third volume of the Excellence in Literature curriculum. Focus works, including novels, short stories, poems, and drama, have been selected for literary quality, and for their place in the historical development of literature. Context readings provide background information about the author, the historical period, and the literary and artistic context of the focus work.

Students will gain an understanding of the development of literature and will practice the skills of close reading through essays, approach papers, and other creative and evaluative writing.

About Me: I have a BA from UC Berkeley in English and years of experience educating my children beginning when my first child was born 25 years ago. I’ve been instructing children at HIS co-op for several years in IEW and look forward to the challenge of tackling Literary Analysis.

Second Year Spanish

This class will utilize Abeka Spanish 1 to expand the student’s knowledge of Spanish grammar and vocabulary. We will review the rules of pronunciation and verb conjugation as well as other grammatical concepts. Students will learn how to address common situations in Spanish through the practice of conversational language (ordering at a restaurant, asking for directions and more). We will also highlight 12 different hispanic countries to learn what makes each unique. Students will be expected to take weekly quizzes and make use of digital flashcards provided by the teacher. By the end of the year students will write an essay about themselves as well as interview a classmate and present this to the class. Students will receive 1 High School credit upon completion.

Description: The Bones and Stones will introduce your student to the exciting world of dinosaurs, rocks, earthquakes, volcanoes, maps, and more. We will be using the Good and the Beautiful curriculum. 

Students will not need to purchase any books or curriculum for this course. We will be as hands on as possible and there will be minimal work sent home. This class will be geared towards lower elementary students. (1-4 grades)

Anatomy & Physiology

If your child understands the concepts in the exam, they are ready for this class! This will cover fractions and their manipulations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions), addition and subtraction of mixed numbers, area and circumference of a circle, solving for an unknown and units of measure. 

Four days of homework will be assigned and there will be a weekly test for new concepts that are mastered.

World Geography

World Geography is not just a map study, it is about learning to understand the world around us. During this course we will explore the Earth’s, physical and cultural landscapes, and examine how geographic factors influence human behavior, cultures, and economies across different regions and continents.

Texas History

Class Description: “The stars at night are big and bright…deep in the heart of Texas”
Join us for a 2 semester class studying the history of our great state! We will be learning about the native Indians who first called Texas home, The quest for independence, our part in the civil war, cowboy days, and so much more. We will learn about our past, and our present….all about our Texas heritage. There is no curriculum required to purchase as I will provide that. There will be projects, group activities, and some field trips. It’s going to be a great year!
